Description

This loop goes from Vigo Rendena up through the San Valentino valley to Rifugio Gork and on to the remote Malga Praino. The itinerary continues along forest roads and trails to the Borzago valley, where you head back down to the town of Spiazzo and then follow the bike path back to the starting point.

Directions

From the bike path at Bicigrill in Vigo Rendena, take Via Al Sarca towards town. At the intersection with Via Giuseppe Mazzini, continue straight on and then follow Via Nuova until the stoplight at the intersection with state highway 239.

Cross the state highway and take the narrow road that heads up to the left of the supermarket in the direction of Val San Valentino.

Continue on for 150m and keep to the left at the intersection. Continue along the main road, which becomes increasingly steep for 1.7 km up to the San Valentino chapel.

Continue past two switchbacks, then keep to the left at the intersection just after the farmhouses and continue along this flat section of road. Continue on for 2.9 km until the intersection at the bridge and then cross the bridge. Turn left towards Rifugio Gork and continue along the dirt road for about 3 km to Malga Praino. You will find a gate just before the malga. Be sure to close it again after you go through.

Once you arrive at the mountain pasture, the road continues straight and heads back into the forest. Shortly after, you will find another gate (to be closed after you go through), after which the road turns into a trail. At the first fork in the trail, keep to the right and continue downhill until a dirt road, where you will keep to the left and then continue slightly uphill to another intersection. Turn right.

Continue downhill, first on a dirt road then on paved road for 2.3 km until you come to a switchback with an intersection. Turn left onto the dirt road and continue downhill. The road will become paved and head back uphill for 1.6 km until the switchback at the village of Mada. After the switchback, continue on the paved road followed by a section dirt road, then stone-paved road, and dirt road again for 1 km (do not turn right at the first intersection with a fountain). At the second intersection, turn right onto a bumpy dirt road.

Continue on for 300 m. At a certain point, the road will widen. Here you will head down to the right along a trail. After about 400m, you’ll find yourself on a dirt road where you will turn left. Follow the main dirt road downhill for 5 km until you reach the paved road, where you will turn left. Continue on until the bridge and cross it. At the next intersection, keep to the right and continue downhill towards Spiazzo. BEWARE!! The road is steep!

Continue on the paved road for 3 km. When you reach the switchback above town, keep to the left and continue along the flat until another intersection, where you will turn right. At the next intersection, keep to the left and head down to the intersection with the state highway. Get off and push your bike across the pedestrian crossing and then continue straight on towards the church. Cross the bridge and turn right, then follow the bike path for 4.7 km back to the starting point.

Safety instructions
The roads, trails, and ski runs indicated are often used in the opposite direction as well, so keep an eye out for hikers, other cyclists, and vehicles. On trails and other narrow roadways, pay close attention to hikers and slow down or stop as seems appropriate under the circumstances. Always were a helmet and never underestimate the difficulty of the trails. Be careful when crossing wood bridges, as they can often be slippery. Avoid skidding as this can damage both your tires and the road surface.

Please note that the practicability of the itineraries in a mountain environment is strictly linked to the contingent conditions and is therefore influenced by natural phenomena, environmental changes and weather conditions. For this reason, the information contained in this page may have changed. Before leaving for a tour, make sure the path you will approach is still accessible by contacting the owner of the mountain hut, the alpine guides or the visitor centres of the nature parks, the info offices of the local tourist board.

Tips

The first section of the trip until the San Valentino chapel is very steep, so be sure to pace yourself.

In Spiazzo, we recommend crossing the state highway using the pedestrian underpass. For the underpass, you will need to get off and push your bike.
