We welcome you to the mountain village Frauenwald. Especially winter sports enthusiasts and hikers feel at home here. Every year, an international sled dog race takes place here in winter. The soup night of all Frauenwald innkeepers on the opening evening of the races is legendary.
According to legend, Count Poppo IV lost his way in 1177 while hunting in the forest. A cowboy picked him up and brought him back on the right path. In return, the hunter had one wish. He wished for a chapel where he could say a prayer. And so Count Poppo had a chapel built. Later the chapel was developed into a provostry with a nunnery. That is how Frauenwald got its name. The convent existed here until 1520.
You can take a sometimes oppressive journey back in time to the history of East Germany in the nearby Bunker Museum. The GDR party leadership had operated an underground bunker near Frauenwald to üsurvive for a year in case of war and to secure command structures. You can visit the original technology on guided tours, and even overnight stays are possible in the bunker.
