This easy hike with an elevation gain of just 40 metres starts at Fohnsdorf's main square. Walk along Judenburger Straße until you reach the turn-off to the left to the mining museum. Alternatively, you can park directly at the Fohnsdorf Mining Museum.
The signposted nature trail around the sewage ponds begins here. A few steps take you to the natural paradise around the former sewage ponds. This is an 18.6-hectare bird sanctuary. Dogs must be kept on a lead.

VIENNA (approx. 2 hours)Take the A2 motorway to the Seebenstein junction, direction S6 Semmering. Follow the Murtalschnellstraße S36 until the Judenburg Ost exit. Turn right towards Hetzendorf on the L516 (Judenburger Straße). After approx. 2 km turn right to the Fohnsdorf Mining Museum or straight on to the main square in Fohnsdorf.
LINZ (approx. 2 hours)Take the A1 motorway in the direction of Salzburg. In Sattledt change to the A9 motorway towards Graz as far as the St. Michael i.O. junction. Continue on the Murtalschnellstraße S36 towards Klagenfurt until the Judenburg Ost exit. Turn right towards Hetzendorf on the L516 (Judenburger Straße). After approx. 2 km turn right to the Fohnsdorf Mining Museum or straight on to the main square in Fohnsdorf.
SALZBURG (approx. 2 hours)At Salzburg Nord take the A1 towards Linz Wien, at the Voralpenkreuz junction take the A9 towards Graz as far as the St. Michael i.O. junction. Continue on the Murtalschnellstraße S36 to the Judenburg Ost exit. Turn right towards Hetzendorf on the L516 (Judenburger Straße). After approx. 2 km turn right to the Fohnsdorf Mining Museum or straight on to the main square in Fohnsdorf.
KLAGENFURT (approx. 1 hour)Klagenfurt Ost onto the A2 motorway towards Graz Wolfsberg. Take the Bad St. Leonhard exit onto the Obdacher Bundesstraße B78 towards Zeltweg. Take the Zeltweg bypass onto the S36, direction Klagenfurt, after approx. 2.5 km take the Judenburg Ost exit. Turn right towards Hetzendorf on the L516 (Judenburger Straße). After approx. 2 km, turn left to the Fohnsdorf Mining Museum or continue straight on to the main railway station.
MURAU (approx. 1/2 hour)Follow the Murtal Bundesstraße B96 in the direction of Scheifling. Turn left onto the Friesacher Bundesstraße B317 towards Judenburg. Follow the Murtal motorway S36 to the Judenburg Ost exit. Turn right towards Hetzendorf on the L516 (Judenburger Straße). After approx. 2 km turn right to the Fohnsdorf Mining Museum or continue straight on to the main square in Fohnsdorf.
