- Description
-
This extremely demanding, unique via ferrata, difficulty level E, leads through a 70m deep cave in the western Hochschwab.
The climb was very well designed, after the descent (D) you get to the cave entrance , through the cave then back up.
ATTENTION: On this via ferrata the one-way rule applies!
The via ferrata can be combined very well with the Kaiser Franz Josef via ferrata - if you have enough strength. Together, the two routes make for a phenomenal and unmistakable via ferrata experience high above Lake Leopoldstein.
- Directions
-
ACCESS:
The approach is via the Kaiser-Franz-Joseph via ferrata (D, 4h).
ALTERNATIVE ASCENT:
Alternatively, you can reach the entrance via the marked hiking trail 822 in the direction of Hochblaser in 2.5h.
HIKING:
40 minutes, 70Hm
From the backpack place one to the cave exit and descend to the right in an intersection (C last D) and traverse to the cave entrance (A/B and B). In the cave steep (D) to the rope bridge and over it (B) to the other side of the cave. There narrow and strongly overhanging up (E), only briefly easier (C/D), you reach the last overhang (D/E). Then still over a beautiful wall (C) to the exit.
Observe one-way rules (i.e. do not descend through the cave).
DESCENT:
2 hrs, 1050 hm.
From the exit, return to trail 822 and descend via this trail to the valley.
ALTERNATIVE DESCENT:
After the exit it takes about 45 minutes to reach the summit of the Hochblaser (1771m) and on the marked path via the Hassenwilzinghütte (not managed, 1346m) and the so-called Geißstall to the Seeau and along the lake back to the parking lot (from Hochblaser summit another 3 hours).

The equipment for your safety on the via ferrata
Basic equipment: helmet harness via ferrata set
Careful planning and realistic assessment of your abilities are crucial for safe and enjoyable via ferrata tours. Find out about the difficulty level, distance, route, weather and weather conditions from people who know the area or experts. Never set the goal too high. Difficulties that are set too high reduce the expected success and can put you in dangerous situations. Before the via ferrata tour, check each other's harness buckles, connection of via ferrata set to climbing harness and helmet to make sure they are fully functional.
- Safety instructions
-
Who has no more strength after the Kaiser Franz Joseph via ferrata, should not climb down to the cave (at the bottom there is no escape possibility, so you have to climb up again in any case and the via ferrata passages are much harder than at the Kaiser Franz Joseph via ferrata !!!).
The Seemauer is a south face! Do not forget sun protection!
Emergency call mountain rescue: 140
Emergency message tip - give answers to the six W-questions: What happened? How many injured? Where did the accident happen (possibly GPS coordinates)? Who is reporting (callback number)? When did the accident happen? Weather at the accident site?
Alpine distress signal: 6 x per minute (call, whistle, light signal) 1 minute break then repeat
- Tips
-
Those who still have enough strength climb to the summit of the Hochblaser.
