From the parking of the Schmittenhöhenbahn you walk on path no. 64 (Sonnkogelweg) past Alpine Resort Hotel Schwebebahn and Pension Farchenegg. You will reach high to get stunning views don to Lake Zell an Zell am See. After half an hour you will arrive at Berghotel Jaga-Alm and after one more hour at Berghotel Blaikner's Sonnalm (located next to Sonnalmbahn). After multiple serpentines you will see Schmiedhofalm. The Sonnkogel is only 40 minutes walking time away. Arrived at the Sonnkogel restaurant you start follow the Erlebniswerg Höhenpromenade (No. 68) Lots of presentation boards, viewing platforms and telescopes do offer magnificent prospects. The path continues along the Salersbachköfpfl, the rige sink, via Hochzelleralm to the top-station Schmittenhöhenbahn. From the summit Schmittenhöhe you can enjoy beautiful views on the surrounding mountains and the Sissi-Chapel. Here there would also be a great possibility for a rest at Schmitten Café or Berghotel Schmitten (descent possible with the Schmittenhöhenbahn).
Thereafter the walk goes down to Kettingalm (path no. 719 - Pinzgauer Spaziergang). At the Kettingalm you cross a meadow and get to the info sign "Pfaffenkendelsteig" (No. 69; overnight-stays possible in the Pinzgauer Hütte). At the end of the 1,5 km long hike you will reach the Schmittenhöhenweg (No. 50) and respectively the Areitweg (No. 56A, 51) which you follow back to the valley. If you do not want to walk back to the valley there is the possibility to use the cityXpress for a descent to the center of Zell am See or the Areitbahn for a descent to Schüttdorf.
