Description

The Rotenfels vitality tour ("Vitaltour Rotenfels") stretches between the edge of the Rotenfels volcanic rock and the Kauzenberg and Kreuznach’s new town. On the one hand, it opens up the Rotenfels rock with many spectacular viewpoints, where we hike along its entire length. In the direction of Bad Kreuznach, there are dense, rustic mixed forests to cross. The landscape on the Kauzenberg plateau is characterised by field cultivation, viticulture and pastures. Kauzenburg ruins lie high above Bad Kreuznach. We reach the old town through the romantic castle park with its three museums and finally dive briefly into the medieval new town of Kreuznach. The Panoramaweg (Panorama Trail) and the subsequent Höhenweg (Heights Trail) provide beautiful views over Bad Kreuznach, the spa area, the Salinental Valley and towards Rheinhessen. The trail goes up through oak and beech forest towards Rotenfels again. The Rabenfels is another striking viewpoint. The varied tour amazes with its diversity.

Directions

From the hike portal, our path leads over the road, diagonally right into the forest After the Götzenfels with two wonderful views and a steep, rocky descent, we pass through vineyards that take us to the impressive Götzenfelsblick. First through vineyards, later ascending through forest, our path reaches the heights of the Kreuznach city forest. We take a bend around the television tower and hike via the Dachskopf down into Lohrer Valley. We continue over a mountain ridge to the open Kauzenburg plateau, past the Teetempel viewpoint to the Romantic castle park with its museums.

Through the park, we reach Kreuznach's charming, historic new town and the bridge houses on the old Nahe Bridge. Now our path follows up the Panorama Trail for a while with a view over the rooftops and back down until it turns into a narrow path. This leads us up to the Leni-Müller hut. On comfortable forest paths we reach the open countryside on the Rotenfels plateau. Afterwards, shady paths lead down to the Stegfels with its glorious view of Bad Münster am Stein – Ebernburg.

After a stretch of flat rocky path through sparse vegetation and a rock tunnel, stony serpentines take us back up to the slope edge of the Rotenfels steep face. Accompanied by spectacular distant views, we walk 200m above the Nahe to the Rotenfels·Bastei viewpoint. Forest paths lead back to the hike portal.

Safety instructions

The tour includes passages that may be exposed to strong sunlight from the midday hours. Carrying drinks and sunscreen is strongly recommended.

Barriers and unsteady surfaces (boulders) at various points.

Warning: Oak trees can be infested with the oak processionary moth over large areas. The caterpillar of the oak processionary moth is a health hazard. The stinging hairs of the caterpillars contain a nettle poison. They can also be carried by the wind. Contact with the caterpillars can be harmful to humans and pets. Caterpillar dermatitis is particularly common, with the following symptoms: Skin rashes and redness, slight swelling of the skin, wheals, itching and burning all over the body. If the stinging hairs (which contain thaumatopoein) are inhaled, this can lead to irritation of the mucous membranes of the mouth and nose, bronchitis, asthma or even allergic shock. Even after the life cycle of pupa, caterpillar and moth, the empty webs with their stinging hairs pose a threat over a longer period of time.

Precautionary measures:

Observe the warning advice Infested oak trees should be avoided (do not use seating groups in the vicinity). Caterpillars and webs must not be touched under any circumstances (never try to destroy webs yourself) Do not lay or sit on the ground in the vicinity of infested oak trees. Protect body with clothing (neck, arms) Lead animals on a leash, stay on the path Report findings: These can possibly be professionally removed with special equipment, endangered areas can be marked. If you have come into contact with the stinging hairs of the caterpillars, you should change your clothes and take a shower. Clothing must be washed at 60°C minimum
Tips

Detour to the spa park with its salt atomizer. In Kreuznach Castle Park Roman Hall, the Museum for Puppet Theatre Culture and the Castle Park Museum.

Directions

You can get to the main portal on the Rotenfels via the L 236 from Bad Kreuznach and Rüdesheim/Nahe. Take the first road into Traisen (Rotenfelsstraße), drive through to the end. Careful - narrow road: Be aware of oncoming traffic.

It is easy to get there via Bad Kreuznach: park in the City-Parkhaus Mühlenstraße. From here, it's a three minute walk to the old Nahe Bridge.

Or you can use the entry point to the tour via the car park at the Kauzenburg restaurant. Access via Rüdesheimer Straße/Dessauer Straße.

Public transportation

a)

In Bad Kreuznach, the tour can be started at the Alte Nahebrücke Bad Kreuznach, corner of Klappergasse or in the opposite direction via the corner of Mannheimer Straße/Zwingel. In 15 minutes on foot you can reach Bad Kreuznach railway station with direct connections on the Frankfurt-Mainz-Ingelheim-Bad Kreuznach-Idar-Oberstein-Saarbrücken and Kaiserslautern-Bingen-Koblenz lines. www.bahn.com/en

A bus line also runs from the station - Bad Kreuznach bus stop, Stadtwerke lines, 203, 204, 240 and 241. From there, cross through the subway to the other side of the road. Walk along Mühlenstraße to Mannheimer Straße, cross both bridges of the Alte Nahebrücke on the right. (5 minute walk).

b)

From Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg, the access route is via the railway station. Via Berliner Straße you reach Rotenfelstraße and follow it in the direction of Kaiserblick, from there you go up to the Rotenfels rocks, where you meet the vitality tour. It is already a beautiful hiking route at this stage.

Parking

Portal: Car park on the Rotenfels, which is, however, very busy on weekends or holidays when the weather is nice. This car park is not recommended on busy days, especially as parking on the street itself is prohibited.

Good alternatives are the car park on the Kauzenberg (approach Dessauer Straße, Hüffelsheimer Straße), where you enter the tour at the Kauzenburg on the Schlossberg. Or choose the city car park in Mühlenstraße and the access point in Altstadt Bad Kreuznach (Brückenhäuser, on the corner of Klappergasse/Mannheimer Straße).

Another option is to park in the Salinental Valley on the B 48 and follow the Burgweg until you come to the Vitaltour at Oertelshütte.
