Route along the wire (cycling around Ljubljana)

The barbed wire surrounding Ljubljana became a symbol of resistance for the people of Ljubljana. The after war authority decided to create a Trail of memories and cameraderie, on the route where the barb wire was. The idea was to create a wide hiking trail, covered with trees. Around 150.000 people (school kids, citizens, military) helped build the 4m wide, 30 km mostly macadam trail, and it took almost 8 years to finish it. Since Ljubljana almost doubled in size after the war, the route now heads through the streets of the city (on some parts).

The route is well marked and boasts only one, steep, ascend...up to Golovec. Otherwise the trail is pretty straight. Nowdays, it is used for recreational purpuses and you will meet a lot of runners and cyclers out there.

Each year, from the opening of the trail, in the beginning of may, a recreational event is held, when tens of thousands of people of all ages head out and circle Ljubljana.

There is no need for turn by turn directions, since the trail is well marked.
