- Description

This tour is a scenic tour suitable for beginners and families. The tour starts in Celerina and travels up along the Bernina tributary of the river Inn crossing the river at Pontrasina and following a very easy singletrail to the train station at Morteratsch. From the train station it's a gentle ride up to the glacier. Along the way you can see signs showing how much the glacier has retreated in recent years. Until summer 2014 it was not possible to ride up to the glacier and bikes had to be left at the Morteratsch train station. In 2014 the bike ban was lifted so please ride responsibly to ensure access for future years. The tour continues down the opposite side of the valley back towards Celerina.
The restaurant at Morteratsch is a nice option for lunch along the route.
- Directions
-
From Celerina ride past the train station and turn right at the end of the platform through the old town. Cross the river and pass the old church on a hill at San Gian. Immediately after the church turn left and veer right at the football pitch. Cross the river and ride along the edge of the river to Pontrasina.
In Pontrasine ride up through the town. When exiting the town stay left past and take the hiking route on the left hand side of the main Berninapass road. Stay left and get into the hiking trail heading towards Morteratsch. Keep riding this trail (it sometimes changes between trail and unpaved road) until you get a hairpin bend in the Berninapass road. Ride downhill 200m to the next Switchback and take the singletrail here to the glacier. The trail is a little steeper here so care may be needed for complete beginners.
At Morteratsch take the unpaved road back to the glacier, return to Morteratsch by the same route.
On the return journey turn left just before the railway lines and ride back towards Pontrasina. Approximately 500m from Morteratsch there is a singletrail which veers off to the left and runs parralel to the unpaved road almost the whole way back to Pontrasina. Intermediate riders can easily take this singletrail. For complete beginners the trail is completely ridable too, but there are a number of drainage channels running accross the trail that may need to be dismounted for.
In Pontrasina ride past the train station and follow signs for Lez Staz before descending back down to Celerina.

- Safety instructions
-
While this tour is for the most part suitable for beginner riders, there are one or two short and moderatly steep downhills on the trail between Pontrasina and Morteratsch train station which may need to be walked.
The trail from Morteratsch back to Pontrasina has a number of drainage channels which may be difficult to negotiate for complete beginners. It is very easy to avoid these by staying on the unpaved road back to Pontrasina.
