Description

Mt. Krn is the highest mountain of the Krn Mountain range and one of the most easily accessible two-thousand-metre-high mountains in the Soča Valley. The access from the Kuhinja Mountain pasture is relatively simple but long because of the high altitude difference. At the foothills of this mountain, you can stop and refresh yourself at the mountain hut on the Kuhinja Mountain pasture, whilst just beneath the summit of Mt. Krn you come across the Gomiščkovo zavetišče Mountain hut. There were fierce battles taking place on Mt. Krn and the neighbouring Mt. Batognica during World War I, which is why this mountain range is still full of remnants from those battles in these areas. The entire tour offers splendid views and a wonderful descent past the lake in the Lužnica Valley.  Mt. Rdeči rob is also a geological peculiarity because it is composed of older red coloured rocks. During the summer months you can buy delicious dairy products on all mountain pastures beneath Mt. Krn.

Directions

At the parking lot on the Kuhinja Mountain pasture turn to the left and continue along the lower road towards the mountain hut on the Kuhinja Mountain pasture. The trail is initially routed along the road through a strip of thin forest and later splits into two trails. The somewhat shorter trail to the right avoids the mountain hut on the Kuhinja Mountain pasture, whilst the trail to the left continues along the road and passes the mountain hut. Just above the mountain hut both trails come back together and continue towards Mt. Krn.

The following section of the trail is steeper and routed along the grassy slopes. The trail crosses the mountain road a couple of times and comes to the Slapnik Mountain pasture after approximately 40 minutes of walking from where it continues and crosses the road for another couple of times and comes to the Zaslap Mountain pasture.

From here, the trail gradually ascends along the grassy slopes to the ridge of Mt. Krn where it continues along the hairpins. The last section of the ascent to the Gomiščkovo zavetišče Mountain hut becomes rockier but still wide enough. From this mountain hut, the trail continues towards Mt. Krn whose top you reach after approximately ten minutes of walking along the rocky mountain slope.

From the top of the mountain the trail descends to the mountain pass between Mt. Krn and Mt. Batognica. At this mountain pass you already come across the iron remnants of the Isonzo Front. At this point you can also return to the Kuhinja Mountain pasture but it is well worth visiting Mt. Batognica and the lake in the Lužnica Valley. From the notch of Mt. Krn the trail continues directly towards Mt. Batognica. This interesting trail winds along the remnants of the underground trenches and bunkers because it is routed along the area of the fiercest battles between the Italian and the Austro-Hungarian line of defence. From Mt. Batognica the trail descends towards the distinctive Mt. Vrh nad Peski where it continues to the depression with a lake in the Lužnica Valley. After a short ascent, the trail turns to the right and descends for a while towards the grassy slopes of the mountain pastures beneath Mt. Krn. After that, the trail soon comes to a junction where the trail to the left leads to the Sleme Mountain pasture and the trail to the right, which you follow, leads to the Leskovca Mountain pasture. There is only one more descent you have to overcome until you reach the Kuhinja Mountain pasture.

Safety instructions

The trail to Mt. Krn from the Kuhinja Mountain pasture is one of technically easier hiking trails ascending on a two-thousand-metre-high mountain in the Soča Valley. The first section of the trail to the Zaslap Mountain pasture is routed along the gravel road with some concrete sections, whilst the last section of the trail to the top of the mountain is routed along a wide and marked hiking trail.

This is an easy hiking trail. Use of hiking trails is at your own risk!

Tips

We recommend you to start the tour early in the morning during the summer months because the entire ascent to the top of Mt. Krn is routed along the southern sunny side of the mountain.
